The Father was neither made nor created nor begotten from anyone. To say that there are three gods or lords. There is but one uncreated and immeasurable being. So too there are not three uncreated or immeasurable beings What quality the Father has, the Son has, and the Holy Spirit has.Īnd yet there are not three eternal beings Their glory equal, their majesty coeternal. That we worship one God in trinity and the trinity in unity,įor the person of the Father is a distinct person,Īnd that of the Holy Spirit still another.īut the divinity of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is one, Whoever desires to be saved should above all hold to the catholic faith.Īnyone who does not keep it whole and unbroken will doubtless perish eternally.
We must therefore admit equality among the divine persons. Wherefore it follows, that if there were any inequality in the divine persons, they would not have the same essence and thus the three persons would not be one God which is impossible. But quantity, in God, is nothing else than His essence. i): "They must needs admit a difference who speak of either increase or decrease, as the Arians do, who sunder the Trinity by distinguishing degrees as of numbers, thus involving a plurality." Now the reason of this is that unequal things cannot have the same quantity. Now we cannot admit anything greater or less in the divine persons for as Boethius says (De Trin. x, text 15,16, 17), equality signifies the negation of greater or less.
